Hurricane Laura Brings Devastation to Louisiana

On August 27th, 2020, Hurricane Laura hit Louisiana and left a path of devastation and destruction. Hurricane Laura has caused at least six deaths, including a 14-year-old girl. These deaths occurred due to trees collapsing into houses throughout southern Louisiana.

Hurricane Laura brought winds upward of 150 mph and caused devastating damage to homes, businesses, historical landmarks, places of worship, schools, and more. A 20-foot flash flood storm surge wrecked Lake Charles, Louisiana, and neighboring counties. Furthermore, a chemical plant caught fire started in West Lake, Louisiana, causing harmful smoke to be released in the air, including “chlorine, nitric oxide, and other toxins used in industrial and commercial disinfectants and swimming pools maintenance,” according to The Washington Post.

The Vermilion Parish Police Jury cautioned people who had not yet evacuated to take their lives into their own hands. People were encouraged to write their name, social security number, and next of kin on a piece of paper put it in a Ziploc bag and put it in their pocket to be identified and accounted for in case they died
